Vaccinations/EKG Q & A

What are vaccinations?

Vaccinations are medical treatments that keep you safe from getting certain diseases. Vaccines contain small amounts of the disease that gets injected into your body without causing any physical harm to you. This injection triggers your body to produce antibodies to fight off the disease, which prevents you from getting sick now and in the future if you’re exposed to the disease.

Common vaccinations include:

  • Flu
  • Mumps, rubella, and diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Chickenpox and shingles
  • Smallpox
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis

In most cases, you only need one injection to develop an immunity to the disease. However, some vaccines, such as tetanus, require a booster to keep you healthy. The flu vaccine also needs to be given each year due to the many variations of the influenza virus.

Are vaccinations safe?

Vaccines are safe. Before you get a vaccine, it’s undergone years of testing to ensure safety. Vaccines not only protect you from getting sick, but they protect those around you, too.

What is an EKG?

An EKG is a special test that measures the electrical impulses in your heart. Nu Wave Medical Center is equipped with an EKG machine.

During the test, Dr. Sekhon attaches sensors to specific spots on your chest and abdomen to measure the strength and timing of the electrical impulses that come from the pacemaker cells in your heart.

An EKG is noninvasive and takes only a few minutes, and Dr. Sekhon can provide you with the results of your test right away.

Why would I need an EKG?

Dr. Sekhon is an internal medicine physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating health conditions that affect adults. She may recommend an EKG for a number of different reasons after completing a thorough physical exam.

Common reasons you may need an EKG include:

  • Chest pain
  • Fainting or fatigue
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Heart palpitations
  • Irregular heartbeat

If an abnormality is found, Dr. Sekhon may refer you to a cardiologist for further testing.

The office EKG machine can only detect abnormalities with your heartbeat that occur during the test. If Dr. Sekhon suspects an underlying heart condition she couldn’t capture on her EKG machine, she may recommend additional testing to assess your heartbeat overtime.
