How Does EMSellaⓇ Treat Urinary Incontinence?

If you’re a woman of a certain age, you might be coping with urine leakage issues that leave you with a distinct lack of confidence about getting out there and living life to the fullest. It’s only natural to feel this way, since fretting about whether you might have an accident at an inopportune time (and aren’t they all, really?) is quite stressful.
You may find comfort in knowing that you’re not alone — more than 25 million Americans experience incontinence problems, men included, though women over 50 are particularly affected.
What would really be the best comfort, however, is a treatment that brings you relief.
At Nu Wave Medical Center, Dr. Gurprit Sekhon helps many patients facing problems with incontinence, and in addition to certain lifestyle changes she can suggest, like managing your fluid intake, avoiding bladder irritants, and more, we also offer an innovative treatment that’s helping patients tremendously — EMSellaⓇ.
Dr. Sekhon always focuses on her patient’s needs, preferences, and medical history as she creates her customized treatment plans, so you can rest assured that your well-being and best interests are her top priorities.
More than one type of incontinence
Urinary incontinence is far from one-size-fits-all. There are four broad types, and Dr. Sekhon will first want to determine yours:
1. Stress incontinence
This type of incontinence originates when you’re stressing your bladder with physical activity. Think leakage during exercise, sneezing or coughing, or when you enjoy a hearty laugh.
2. Urgency incontinence
Urgency incontinence happens when you can’t make it to the bathroom before having an accident. The need to urinate comes on quickly and is intense, and it can also plague you frequently, even disrupting a good night’s sleep.
Urgency incontinence can sometimes be caused by an infection, so treating that can eliminate the problem, but certain chronic conditions can also be responsible, such as diabetes or a neurological disorder.
3. Functional incontinence
This is when a mental or physical limitation presents a barrier to using the bathroom in a timely way. For instance, if you live with arthritis, you may experience leakage because it takes too much time to unbutton your pants.
4. Mixed incontinence
Unfortunately, more than one type of incontinence can affect you at the same time, and we often see patients experiencing symptoms of both urgency and stress incontinence simultaneously.
No matter what type of incontinence you’re living with, it’s bound to cause unease and physical discomfort. It may even point to an underlying physical condition. Bottom line: It’s important not to delay seeking treatment, so you can have your life back.
A new treatment choice for incontinence
If you’re female, having had children or being postmenopausal are both risk factors for incontinence; if you’re male, having an enlarged prostate or past prostate surgery are contributing factors.
Pelvic floor muscle weakness is also a major cause of incontinence — and the reason why bladder problems often start during pregnancy. These muscles are located across your lower abdomen and support your bladder and other organs in both men and women.
Dr. Sekhon has adopted a treatment that strengthens diminished pelvic muscles and works through the use of advanced HIFEM® (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) technology. EMSella treatment is noninvasive, and Dr. Sekhon uses a small handheld device to restore the normal relaxation and contraction patterns of your pelvic floor muscles.
It’s a targeted treatment that causes your pelvic floor muscles to relax and contract continuously, and over your half-hour session, you experience thousands of contractions, markedly improving bladder control.
Though you may feel a slight tingling and muscle contractions during treatment, that’s all most patients notice sensation-wise.
Our patients have enthusiastically embraced EMSella treatment, thanks to its many benefits:
- Noninvasive
- Brief treatments that average 30 minutes per session
- Comfortable and easy-to-tolerate
- No post-treatment downtime
- Improved bladder control ability after just a single treatment
Dr. Sekhon advises that, for the best results, patients should schedule six EMSella treatments over three weeks.
EMSella helps you regain control of your bladder so you can feel confident as you exercise, socialize, and simply do all the things you need and want to do each day.
