Three Reasons to Consider Medical Weight Loss This Spring

Three Reasons to Consider Medical Weight Loss This Spring

If you’re dreading the upcoming bathing suit season and feeling sluggish because of extra pounds, you can shed them and anticipate summer with excitement — if you approach weight loss the right way.

This means enacting smart and healthy strategies. In other words, no fad diets, no excessive restrictions, and no “get thin quick” schemes!

Fortunately, Dr. Gurprit Sekhon and her exceptional team at Nu Wave Medical Center are highly experienced in helping their patients lose weight in a way that supports their health, gets results, and doesn’t feel like torture!

Everybody and every body is different, which is why it’s vital to have your weight loss plan customized to your unique preferences, metabolism, and lifestyle. Losing weight successfully definitely isn’t “one size fits all.”

Obesity: A serious problem in Florida and the United States

Obesity is a concerning public health issue for Americans. In Florida, approximately 30% of residents are overweight or obese, while, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 40.3% of people across the country were found to live with obesity during the two-year period between August 2021 and August 2023.

This is especially concerning because excess weight puts a person at greater risk for serious, life-threatening and chronic diseases, including:

Whether you’re overweight, which is defined by having a body mass index (BMI) 25 or over, or obese, defined by a BMI 30 or over, it’s smart to take action. Body mass index is calculated by measuring a person’s body fat in reference to their height and weight.

Why you shouldn’t put off weight loss — again

As temperatures warm and flowers bloom, it’s the ideal time to start a weight loss program — not only to support your overall health, but so you can feel great about how you look come summer.

Other than your self-esteem, we’ve got three excellent reasons to get serious about your weight loss journey.

1. Weight loss helps improve all your “numbers”

Dr. Sekhon often talks to patients about “knowing their numbers.” These are the numerically based measures of your health that tell us a lot, and help Dr. Sekhon assess your risk for the health conditions we listed earlier, and others:

Per the American Heart Association, the numbers we should strive for are a blood pressure reading of less than 120/80 mm Hg, a blood sugar level lower than 100 mg/dL, and a BMI of between 18.6 and 24.9. Goal cholesterol numbers vary, and you should discuss those with Dr. Sekhon.

The sooner you know your numbers, the healthier you’ll be.

2. Your joints won’t ache

Extra weight puts pressure on your joints that leads to pain and discomfort, as well as arthritis. Those pounds contribute to accelerated cartilage breakdown and are particularly damaging to your weight-bearing joints (your hips and knees).

3. You’ll sleep better

No matter what season it is, good sleep is a pillar of your health. Being overweight or obese interferes with high-quality rest and puts you at risk for sleep apnea, insomnia, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and even anxiety and depression.

Research points to the fact that excess weight might be leading to negative metabolic and sleep/wake cycle changes that adversely impact your sleep.

Each of these factors is reason enough for you to think about losing weight this spring, but doing it correctly, so results are lasting, is critical.

What are my options for taking off the weight before summer arrives?

If you’ve tried to lose weight before — whether once or many times — only to gain it back (and then some), you know it can feel like a losing battle. It’s understandable, too, to be frustrated if you’ve cleaned up your diet and started exercising, but the scale hasn’t budged.

When you commit to a weight loss program that’s medically supervised, like Dr. Sekhon offers, your chances of success — and a great summer — skyrocket.

When we team up to help you with weight loss, Dr. Sekhon may recommend — in addition to a healthy eating plan that’s tailored to you  — additional strategies:

When you come to Nu Wave Medical Center for help with weight loss, you get the best combination of clinical knowledge, a plan that’s evidence-based, and a team that wants to see you succeed.
