What Your Heart Is Saying: Why an EKG Is Part of a Comprehensive Check-Up
Your annual wellness exam is a critically important part of maintaining your overall health. If you see your physician regularly, they can catch any health issues that may be brewing and address them earlier rather than later — when they turn more serious and are more complicated to treat.
Heart health is something that Dr. Gurprit Sekhon monitors regularly for her Nu Wave Medical Center patients, and we’re happy to offer electrocardiogram (EKG) testing as part of your physical exam, when Dr. Sekhon considers it appropriate.
Dr. Sekhon is conscientious about providing comprehensive care to her patients, takes the time to speak with them about their health history and current health concerns, and she never fails to approach her patients with compassion.
Heart health is vital to your overall health
Alarmingly, heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans, so Dr. Sekhon prioritizes assessing your heart health when you come for your annual wellness visit.
The good news is that there are lots of steps you can take to prevent cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle choices go a long way in helping you avoid developing this damaging condition:
- Eating a nutrient-dense diet of plentiful fruits and vegetables and unprocessed foods
- Exercising daily, aiming for at least 30 minutes of movement, five days per week
- Avoiding excessive alcohol use
- Avoiding smoking or quitting if you do smoke
- Managing stress effectively by exercising, enjoying nature, and meditating
To get a picture of your heart health, or if Dr. Sekhon has any concerns, she recommends getting an EKG test, which can tell her important information that will inform your treatment plan.
What is an electrocardiogram?
An EKG is a noninvasive, painless test that tells us information about your heart’s electrical activity. It allows Dr. Sekhon to accurately diagnose:
- A heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
- A previous heart attack
- Why you’re experiencing chest pain (one example is a blocked heart artery)
Dr. Sekhon typically recommends that a patient get an EKG if they have a family history of heart disease (even if they’re not showing any symptoms) or if they mention troubling symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, fatigue, or a noticeably lowered ability to exercise. The test is also appropriate when a patient has a fast pulse or an unusually fluttery heartbeat.
What can I expect when I get an EKG?
Fortunately, an EKG is a quick, easy test.
We start by placing electrodes (small adhesive plastic patches) on your chest, arms, and legs. They’re attached to the EKG machine with lead wires, and the machine records, measures, and interprets your heart’s electrical activity. Then we’re able to print out the results.
The EKG shows:
- The speed at which your heart is beating
- Whether your heart is beating steadily or irregularly
- The timing of the electrical impulses while they’re moving through the parts of your heart
It’s easy to see why an EKG plays an important role in painting the entire portrait of your overall health. Dr. Sekhon can gain much information from the results about your heart health or use it to monitor a condition she has already diagnosed.
